All-Natural Carpet Stain Removal: Methods To Try Next Time You Have A Spill

No matter how hard you work to keep your carpets clean, spills and other stains happen from time to time. When you don't have your favorite spot treatment on hand, you may want to try a natural method that uses ingredients you likely already have in your home. Try these chemical-free options to get your next carpet stain out — without having to make a trip to the store for carpet cleaning solution.

Note: With all stains, remove as much of the staining material as you can before using a homemade cleaner. Before using these methods on your carpet, it's smart to test in an inconspicuous area in case the stain removal method causes bleaching or staining.

  1. Dish detergent and water

Mix a quarter of a teaspoon of dish detergent (it's ok if it's colored, but be sure that it's also see-through) mixed with one cup of warm water. Thoroughly soak the stained area, and scrub with a brush or toothbrush. Soak up the excess dish detergent mixture with clean towels. Repeat as necessary until the stain is removed. If necessary, dry with a fan.

  1. Vinegar and water

Mix one part vinegar to two parts water (if you have synthetic carpets) or one part vinegar to one part water (if you have natural carpets. Spray or dab the mixture onto the stain until it's thoroughly saturated, then remove with a clean towel or white paper towels (be sure nothing is printed on the paper towel). Repeat until the stain is removed. Ventilate the area to help the vinegar smell dissipate, and use a fan to dry the area if necessary.

  1. Club soda

It's easy and well known because it works — club soda is a great tool to get fresh stains (especially red wine) out of carpets. Pour the club soda onto the affected area and let it sit for a few minutes, then pull up the excess liquid with a clean towel. Rinse the area with water and blot again, then air dry or dry with a fan.
